The intrinsic natural SPF is part of many carrier oils used in natural and holistic skincare have. That is in fact a sun protection factor. is one of those carrier oils that we can use to make a sun protection cream.
The SPF measures the level of protection against the UVB rays from the sun.it can be from a very low 1 to a very high 50. Carrot oil has the highest natural SPF’s which is graded as 38-40. Raspberry seed oil at 28-50. Sesame oil, jojoba oil, and coconut oilrange from 4-10 so the oils will not offer enough protection.
If you add zinc oxide, you can actually produce more of a full spectrum sunscreen. It will offer protection against UVA and UVB rays.
The following recipe for a natural coconut oil sunscreen uses a variety of oils and produces more of a body butter. It is safe for the entire family to use. However, make sure that children do not ingest it either unintentionally or intentionally.
How to Make Coconut Oil Sunscreen ?
- 1/4 cup shea butter
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/8 cup jojoba or sesame oil
- 1-2 tbsp. zinc oxide powder (optional)
- 20-30 drops OR 1 tsp. red raspberry seed oil
- 2 tbsp. beeswax granules
- Carrot seed essential oil
- Essential oils of your choice (rosemary, , ,vanilla, and/or peppermint)
- Use a small pan over very low heat or a double boiler to melt your jojoba, coconut oil, sesame oil, shea butter and beeswax together. You should melt the beeswax the last.
2. Remove the mixture from the heat when the beeswax is ready. Let it cool not it fridge but to room temperature. If you use zinc oxide, whisk it in at this point. Of course, be careful not to create dust. It’s fine if there are some lumps. When you whip the body butter in step 4, they will break up.
3. Put this mixture to the fridge for about 15-30 minutes. You want it to start to set up, but still be soft enough to whip.
4. Take the mixture out of the fridge. Start to whip it by using a hand mixer or stand mixer. Drizzle in the carrot seed oil, the red raspberry seed oil, and any essential oils of your choice. Continue whipping until the mixture is fluffy and light.
5. Use it as any regular sunscreen. Application rates will depend on your exposure to water or activity. Between uses, store it in a glass container in the fridge.
